"Christian Happel's 'Family Delights' on display at Wahl-Coates Elementary School of the Arts, one of the newest locations for the outdoor portion of Emerge's Downeast Sculpture Exhibition. 'It builds a conversation,' Emerge Executive Director Holly Garriott said. 'That's what public art is about. It would be so dull without it. Just since we've added the one in the courtyard to the parking deck, it's just amazing how that changes the space.'"

"The outdoor sculpture exhibition opens March 2, 2018. The ten selected outdoor works will remain on exhibit and can be viewed all over Pitt County until February 2019.

Christian Happel, a senior at UNCP, spent spring break cultivating his contribution to the Art Garden. “Family Delights” is an enchanting creation wrought from abandoned light fixtures.

"When my parents and I would go for a walk or cross the street, each of them would take hold of my hands and I would jump up and swing,” he said. “I think the piece is a reminder of that kind of happy experience.”
