This piece, titled: "Guardian II," is one of my interpretations of the word “protect.” This abstract geometric form was inspired by a parent or guardian's protective instinct. In the spirit of "protection," the exterior of the sculpture--having been left to rust in the elements, is layered to look like armoring you might find in nature on an insect or animal. During the design process of the interior of the sculpture, I was thinking of a child being cradled inside of a womb. This project underwent many transformations, but that womb-like inspiration seemed to stick all the way through to the final product.
I enjoyed the idea of the polished ball serving as a metaphor for a child because in viewing the reflections on the ball, you are unwittingly peering back at the world around you. I may not be a father yet but I know that my future child will be my world, much like the ball is to this sculpture.
It was funded through the Fayetteville Arts Council’s RAP Grant in 2018.
