INTRODUCTION
Christian Happel is a young sculptor from the Tampa, FL area who has exhibited works in professional exhibitions since 2016. Originally based out of Fayetteville NC, he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2017. He relocated to Tampa 4 years ago and has since continued to produce new works and enter shows. He has exhibited in 10 different cities across North Carolina over the past 7 years, winning multiple accolades and has been awarded several grants from arts organizations and city governments to fund some of his sculptures. His works are often introspective: frequently exploring distant memories, personal responses to the surrounding world, or aspects of his
personality and the emotions they inspire.

My latest sculptures draw inspiration from personal memories and experiences, and are big part of who I have become. Im transfixed with the ephemeral nature of the moment and how fleeting instances can impact our lives in drastic ways. Often finding myself dwelling on the future, these transient experiences from the past are commonly neglected. Lost within my subconscious, these memories are re-explored through the steel medium and are creatively rendered into the material realm. Alluding to these memories allegorically at a large scale, drives my often-abstract aesthetic because it reflects the ethereal nature of memory and its sometimes hazy quality. These sculptures serve as testament to both my memories and the semi-permanence of steel, which--much like memory, fades with time.
